Mexico’s Irene Aldana impressively halted Russia’s Yana Kunitskaya in the first round. Irene Aldana, the No. 4 ranked female bantamweight fighter, executed a stout performance against No. 5 ranked Yana Kunitskaya, delivering powerful blows and finishing her in the first round.
A left hand by Aldana knocked Kunitskaya down, and a flurry of ground strikes followed. Kunitskaya weathered the initial storm, but when Aldana went back on the attack, referee Jason Herzog stopped the bout. The official time was 4:35 of the first round.Kunitskaya took control of the fight immediately, with a kick-heavy attack getting her on the board early. Aldana took a little longer to get into a rhythm, but once she did, she bloodied her foe and began landing shots to the head and body.
Aldana has won three of her last four fights, her most recent defeat coming against a former champion, Holly Holm. Aldana will certainly move up in the rankings and she could either challenge Amanda Nunes, the current champion, or could draw another top contender.
